WE’VE BEEN HAVING A VERY schizophrenic weather this winter that one day stuns us with bone-chilling cold, and pricks us with hot sunrays the next. Although we all love warmer winter days where we can skip going out wrapped up as Eskimos, the constantly fluctuating temperatures have seriously been hindering my outfit-planning process.

We all have troubles appreciating the clothes in our closet sometimes, but when you don’t know whether you will be cold or hot later, deciding what to wear can be even more difficult. So even if you are not facing the same problem as I am, the following 6 tips can still help you when you don’t know what to wear in winter.

1/6 Fight the winter blues with bright colors!

Although I am a fan of winter outfits consisting of muted neutrals, bright colors have a way of instantly making me look and feel refreshed. It’s also a lot easier to pick one bright color and then play with neutrals around it. That said…

2/6 Pick one item and build an outfit around it.

Putting together an outfit is like writing a story. Sometimes the entire story is clear in your mind and sometimes it takes more brainstorming to see the end of it. Either way, it’s a lot easier when you pick one thing to start with. In winter you have so many more items you can pick from including hats and scarves. Also, if you don’t know what that “one thing” is, just close your eyes and reach for something. You can be surprised how well that works sometimes.

3/6 Wear your clothes in unexpected ways.

I always say this, but you don’t need to buy new clothes to up your outfit game. You can just be creative. You can wear a skirt over a dress and by doing so, you will not only get a brand new outfit, but you will also stay warm. You can wear some of your clothes backwards. I’ve worn a wool skirt backwards because I really wanted a skirt with a front slit at the time, but didn’t own one. I’ve also worn a cardigan backwards because I wanted a sweater with a V neck back opening. I’ve layered a lace top over a white shirt to add more dimension to a simple white shirt and skirt combo. The possibilities are endless!

4/6 It’s winter. It’s cold. You could use a chunky sweater so borrow from the boys!

I wrote about this topic in my last week’s post where I shared 4 things to remember when wearing menswear as a girl. Read more about it there.

5/6 Layer like there is no tomorrow!

Layering is both practical {warmth} and innovative. It can help you wear thinner pieces that you would otherwise not be able to wear in the winter. Take the outfit in this post as an example. You can’t see it, but I am wearing a cardigan over my top because that day I wasn’t planning on taking off my coat and spent the day shopping dressed like this. That’s hidden layering, of course, but you can openly layer and still stay warm if you wear a shirt over your turtleneck, or a vest over a lighter jacket, or even a dress over a pair of pants. You just need to try what works for you.

6/6 Use Pinterest boards.

Sometimes you need a new perspective and Pinterest is really the perfect place to do that. What I do is search for keywords related to the color I want to wear that day or, if I have already chosen one piece to work around like I mentioned in point no.2, I enter that piece as a keyword. Hit ENTER and get inspired!
