TIPS ON HOW TO STYLE OVERSIZED SHIRTS

I often find pieces that are not my size, but look so appealing that I just have to find a way to wear them so I am sharing 3 tips on how to style oversized shirts!

ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS to do is finding ways to incorporate pieces from different sizes into my wardrobe. Of course, when I buy or sew for myself, I always keep in mind proper fit and length unless I am going for an oversized look. But sometimes I somehow acquire pieces that are not my size, but look so appealing that I just have to find a way to wear them. When I say “not my size” I always refer to bigger sizes because I really don’t fancy looking like my clothes had shrunk in the washer by accident. I’d rather look as if I had stolen an older sibling’s clothes. I am a self-proclaimed wardrobe thief, after all.

Believe it or not, this shirt is a size 50, and following its sizing chart, I am a size 36. Despite the gap in sizes, I wore this shirt numerous times in different ways and received a lot of compliments for each look. Although in this post I am showing you only one way, keep reading for some additional tips on how to style oversized shirts!

TIP no. 1

Belt it!

This shirt design incorporates waist ties, so I did a double wrap meaning that I crossed them in the back and then tied them in the front. But even if the piece doesn’t come with a tie, what you can do is find a belt that you think best matches it, and use it to accentuate your waistline. It’s easy as that!

TIP no. 2

Tuck it in!

I often wear oversized tops and unless I decide to take them in and make them fit, I wear them by tucking them in, usually in A-line or similar skirts that don’t show signs of tucking. This is a very important aspect because you want to avoid looking bumpy around your hips. I wore this same outfit to work one day and I just tucked the shirt in the skirt {you can find how the skirt fully looks like here, look no.2}

TIP no. 3

Layer it!

On days when I want to go for a more casual look, I always like to layer. You can use this oversized shirt and wear it open over a top and a pair of jeans or shorts as a lightweight jacket. Since this shirt has waist ties, I would also tie them on the back to make it look more fitted. Instant tailoring trick.
