ONE DAY IN THESSALONIKI, GREECE

The following text may contain exaggerations for comic effect.

I PACK HEAVY. It really doesn’t matter if I am going away for days or just going to buy bread from the local store. That’s what makes me the mommy character in any group I am in. Oh, you need water? Snacks? Wet wipes? Band aids? Your cat? I probably have it in my bag. I recently went on a one-day shopping trip to Thessaloniki with Stefani and I realized {yet again} that I might be going a bit too far with my over-packing tendencies. So I put together a little “duh! Of course you should do that” list that will probably not enlighten you much, but might inspire you to share your silly travelling behaviors in the comments.

If it’s summer, do bring a hat. And a bottle of water. And don’t forget them in the bus/car.

I like how organized I am. I prepare everything beforehand and put it all together where I can see it so I don’t forget anything only to end up forgetting something important. That’s the main problem with carrying too much stuff. Good thing my head is lodged on my shoulders. It’s really important that I have it with me at all times.

You probably won’t need that extra pair of shoes.

Or will you? I am conflicted on this one. Being a blogger, I wanted to take a pair of shoes and an outfit change so we could use the beautiful locations in Thessaloniki as backdrops. Yet, my sneakers were more comfortable so I spent most of the day walking in them. Towards the end, I changed into sandals and shortly after doing so, I ended up tripping on air and ripping them. Oh, the walk of shame. But, what if I had only worn the sandals?  Either way, I do agree with mom on carrying something warm with you even if it’s summer. Them borders are known to get chilly at night.

It’s just one day. Do you really think you will eat all that?

For someone who doesn’t really eat much, I get incredibly worried about being hungry. So every trip is preceded with a supermarket haul where I buy more food than I really need and I end up carrying that heavy bag around. To lessen my load, I keep offering people food. What was it? If you keep on talking about something, you start yearning it? It doesn’t always work. At least not with my friends. So just make sure you have enough to eat while travelling. You’ll end up eating out when you get there anyway.

Don’t spend everything in the first store.

I hate it that when I travel my brain suddenly adopts that YOLO philosophy and is like: “We arrived. I like everything here. You still have all of your money with you. LET’S SPEND IT NOW AND CARRY IT AROUND ALL DAY.” I have to think real hard to be able to make a distinction between what I really do and don’t need to buy. Luckily, reason prevails. Most of the time.

Live the moment.

What I often realize when traveling {or even when going out with friends} is that despite wanting to capture it all on camera, I also want to focus on the experience and view it directly with my eyes, not through my screen. That’s when my #badbloggermode turns on. I think we get so obsessed with sharing experiences that we don’t get to fully experience them. Not everything is supposed to be captured. Pay each passing moment enough attention because it does just that.

It passes. Rather quickly, I might add.
